Robert Pattinson – Why I Feel Sorry For The Guy
Robert Pattinson burst into the public consciousness with the release of Twilight, and he isn’t likely to be leaving any time soon. And while that probably seemed like the greatest gift he could have ever had at first, by now he realizes the type of mega-fame he has achieved now is positively overwhelming. Let’s take a look at both the advantages and disadvantages of the level of fame that Robert Pattinson is currently experiencing.
The advantages of fame are obvious to most are often cited as reasons that Robert Pattinson should be grateful for the bountiful success he’s experiencing. When you’re world famous, as he is, you command top dollar because you’re so in demand. You can also pick and choose the roles you’re offered. For an actor as young as Rob Pattinson, this type of leverage is usually not available. But there’s a double edge sword property to being so well known.
For one thing, the constant attention could get to anyone. Pattinson seems to be extremely well-adjusted for a young man, but anyone will eventually chaff under the nearly constant glare of the spotlight. There’s literally nowhere he can turn to enjoy some peace and quiet. Is there anyone out there who can live their life in a fish bowl? It’s enough to drive anyone crazy and make even the most well adjusted people squirrelly. So far RPatz is doing just fine, but what happens when he finally can’t take the pressure any more?
Not only that, but Robert is in real danger of becoming typecast. Don’t believe it can happen? I have two words for you: Kirk Cameron! When a rising star becomes too tightly aligned with a character he’s playing, especially one that is aimed at the tween demographic, it becomes difficult for people to take him seriously. Sure, the brooding stares that Rob has become so famous for might work on Bella Swan and her fans, but will it work on adult audiences as he attempts to gain more critical acclaim? It remains to be seen.
So right now you have Robert Pattinson becoming one of the most popular stars Hollywood has ever dreamed up. But he’s becoming too famous to even leave his house and he’s in danger of becoming typecast as vampire Edward Cullen.
Further, Robert Pattinson won’t be allowed to date like normal people. Rob has kept very quiet about who he’s dating, and with good reason. Part of his appeal to the millions of Twilight fans is the fact that he’s available. If movie-goers think he’s single and unattached, then they’re likely to think they still have a chance at dating him. Of course the chance is smaller that the one a snowball in Hell has, but that doesn’t stop tweens from dreaming. Hollywood is a place that has been built on dreams, so to shatter that illusion by announcing that Robert Pattinson might actually be in a serious relationship with a woman is not something Summit Entertainment is excited about doing.
This is why I feel bad for Robert Pattinson. He’s caught in a hopeless situation even though from the outside his life looks grand.
He has to run from the Twilight faithful wherever he goes. He will forever remain as Edward Cullen in the minds of millions of fans, not allowed to age or change anymore than an actual vampire can. He will always face resentment in Hollywood from peers who think he’s had it too easy. And he won’t be able to have a normal dating life as long as his reputation as a ladies man is still selling tabloids.
For Robert Pattinson, the fame from Twilight is both a gift….and a curse of the worst order.
Do you feel bad for Robert Pattinson?
Feel sorry for him? Uhh….no! He is rich when millions of people are unemployed. Screw RPAttz. He got lucky. No one will even remember him in a few years.
I have to agree to disagree with your article. I don’t think that Rob will ever be type cast. Take a look at the many different characters he has already played. Also, it is not just the tween audience that adore him, women of all ages do. I do feel sorry for him in the sense that he does not have privacy. Everyone needs their privacy, peace and security. Rob seems to be lacking in those categorys. I’m sure in the near future he will be able to control his surroundings like other stars have, such as Brad Pitt, Tom Cruz, etc. He is one of my favorite actors and I’m sure he is very appreciative to all his fans and recognizes his good fortune. We will be seeing a lot of this young wonderful actor in the future years. He is so humble, straight forward, and unforgetable.
I think as a young actor you have to know what you will get for the hype, but I think enough is enough. Leave the poor guy alone, he is a human just like anyone else. I am a huge twilight mom and can’t wait for the other movies to come out, but this type of pressure on the young actor might make him go into hiding for years, God blessed him with a gift and he using it too bad the young chicklings out there won’t give him a break.. I don’t think he will be forgotten anytime soon, just for all the hype on Twilight and as for a type cast I think it is already headed that way, because people don’t see him for RPatz, they see him as Edward Cullen.
When the fans stop paying attention, its over. RPatz should endure the screaming fans while it lasts. He will not be type cast because he is so versitile. Let’s not forget he is a talented musician as well. He has many attributes to his credit. He’s so shy and humble it is hard for him to accept his position in the entertainment world. He is only 23 but seems to have a good sense as to wrong and right. No drugs, no driving drunk, he is not full of himself and he has a great respect towards others. God has blessed him with talent, looks, personality and brains. He will go far in the entertainment industry. Don’t count this young man out!
Ditto to Trudy. Rob Pattinson is the future of the entertainment world.
I disagree that Robert is in danger of being typecast. Before he even did Twilight he had already done a couple of indy films that are as far removed from being a hearthrob as can be. In fact, in two of those films his gorgeousness was so thoroughly downplayed that he was endearing. Yes, the looks entice you in and if there had been nothing more than that … he would have been over… for me anyway. But I delved, and I found myself laughing uproariously at his many interviews, nodding at his intelligent replies and admiring his quick wit and depracating sense of self and then he giggles and guffaws and then you watch/listen to him singing in that Joe Cocker/Bob Dylan/Jeff Buckley stye of his in all seriousness and hobo looks and then you realize this man is the 360 degrees. As the line in his song Never Thinks, “baby, you got it all”. We can see him in this Twilight franchise, we look forward to RM, looking forward to frontier Rob with Hugh Jackman and as a rake in Bel Ami. I can see him in a comedy – romantic or otherwise, and even as James Bond (but he will have to exercise and maintain those six-packs) and I definitely can see him singing as Jeff Buckley. He said in an interview that it is better that this is happening now than when he was younger. I think he knows how to deal … He seems smart enough to know the cards he’s been dealt and he’s going to the bank with it baby … why not, wouldn’t you? He knows that this is the price one must pay for hitching on to such a lucky star… If there is a common thread I have heard from many of the people who have observed Robert thru his interviews is that, … he is not stupid.
I don’t feel sorry for Robert Pattinson. He knows what’s going on on and I am sure he is counting himself blessed every day. It will go away some day and what is left behind is hopefully a very good career in film and music. What he is going through right now is the eye of an opportunity as big as category 5 hurricane.
I hope he is reading this because we need new RPatz interviews!! It’s been a long time between his last interview (was it in Cannes?)and now. We really miss him. His personality has made his interviews joyful to watch and like a long lost friend is missed when it is gone …
I think he’ll go the way of Lief Garrett, personally. One hit wonder boy.
No don’t feel bad at all. The glare of the spotlight is but a minor inconvenience compared to the riches and opportunities he gets. And Rob realizes how lucky he is, which is why he’s working so hard while the iron is hot. He knows it’s all about luck and timing and Hollyweird is fickle. One thing is sure, Twilight’s success gives him financial freedom to retire from the spotlight if it gets too much for him. He can do theater back home in England if he chooses. It’s what many of his English peers seem to be able to do. That’s if he’s serious about the acting gig. Then again he can turn to behind the camera work and give writing a try and do scripts. I think he’s got the knack for that too.
Robert Pattinson is a happy, well, adjusted person that can look life and laugh and cry as needed. The bastards will never get him down. Rock on and live your life for yourself, the ones you love and the rest will work out. God Bless!!
I do wish folks would leave the guy alone. Although I’m part of the problem because I google him frequently. I think he will hold up fine, and I think he is talented enough to outlive Edward.
I do feel bad for him and worry about what could happen to him, being screamed at all the time and physically assaulted by insane fans. I do think things will calm down for him although it may take some time.
As far as appeal goes, he is not short on adult female fans as well as teenagers. Thank God he’s of legal age since Harry Potter! He is very masculine,, beautiful, exceptionally handsome, and his personality just adds to the appeal! I think it’s pretty obvious of what a great actor he is, and the potential he has. “Adorkable” seems to be the new term, and his characters are not.
@Trudy and samantha – great summations. Rob has appeal to all female age groups. That is oh so obvious in replies to many pieces, interviews, and videos. He does have staying power and he is not a flash in the pan. His appeal, talents, and skills are many.
Eventually all will come to this conclusion too.
Ahhh…Robert! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways….first I agree with all of us Twi_Moms, meaning women of a lesser scream but higher age, when I say You are all that is right and beautiful with the world. I was just telling another twimom co-worker my feelings on your life and you personally and we both agree…you aren’t a flash in the pan, you do have those acting chops and you interview superbly as a much older more wise peer might handle an interview. You’ve obviously given this much thought and are prepared for all that has come your way so far. Yes, the fans can be a bit much, but being a London raised guy, anyone London raised person would have to get used to it here in the states as we sometimes don’t handle our celebs in the right frame of mind. I myself am guilty of googling you, Rob, most morning breaks at work to see if there are any new interviews maybe on YouTube or in the legitimate online mags, and these I look for because of what Jennifer said about a long lost friend being missed when there aren’t any more news coming straight from Robert. I love your music, I love your voice and if this whole acting thing were to end tomorrow for you, for some odd God altering the Universe reason, you would still have your mind! And with it I see you writing all the novels you meant to in London way back when and your music! Oh! Your music as your friends, is so fresh and so beautiful as to say that it is like experiencing what Americans must have when the Beatles were first heard or Buddy Holly, or Elvis. I love the twist you give the genre of music you chose to add to your already burdening list of talents. You and your friends are amazing musicians and lyricists! I love your lyrics…and Bobby’s for that matter and Marcus’ and Sam’s. You put the excitement back into your appearances and your self deprecating ways is so charming and so fresh than what we see today from young Hollywood. Keep doing things as you’ve been doing them and don’t worry about being typecast as Edward. It can only happen if you play all the roles that way, and if you accept them. Much love and respect young Robert. I don’t feel sorry for you, I feel joy and hope since, you. I know you don’t feel sorry for you. I know you are thinking about your life and what is best for you next. That’s apparent. and you make good choices. Keep making them, stay in touch with the people you’ve always known and loved and who love you, and you’ll be just fine.
I think things will calm down after Breaking Dawn is release on DVD. Hang in there, Rob! You would be doing the world a disservice by withdrawing your talent from us.
Rob has a very special gift when it comes to acting. He is very versitile in how he can act.I think he is doing amazing for just starting out.Type cast no way!!!!
Teddy, that’s rude. RPattz didn’t write this article, nor is he asking us to feel sorry for him. Get a grip.

I feel the mayhem will die down. I note a simular path parelling Leo DiCaprio…although Leo did alot of films before Titanic….he had same sitch w/Romeo and Juliett…the awe died down and went to a whole new level w/Titanic. He played a Bisexual in Total Eclipse, a junkie in Basketball Diaries, an abused boy in This boys Life, a special needs boy in Whats eating Gilbert Grape, a teen who is dealing with puberity in Marvins Room, the list goes on…my point is, after every movie, Leo kept going strong…why..he is aan actor, a genious in creativity…I feel Robert Pattinson has so much to give and I am hear to take in what ever his chooses to give….I look forward to see his artisic/creative gift go to all different hieghts and directions! I wish him good luck and happiness in whatever road he chooses!
ps…sorry for all he sp/typos mistakes! opps
i don’t feel bad for him i feel bad for taylor lautner because rob gets all the screaming girls and taylor is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy cuter than him. Taylor deserves the attention!!!!!!!
mima I wouldnt worry about taylor lautner I think he has a different career path he is going down perhaps he wont get things as easy as rob he will have to work for it like he has all his life now his career started at 12 and he has an awesome portfolio i mean even more impressive than rob u have to admit but taylor will get there too u have to remember the age difference between taylor and rob rob is officially an adult taylor is still a kid let him get to 22-23 and we will see where he is at!!
I do hope ppl will let him go out with out any guards and calling security.
I do feel sorry for ROBERT.
I think he would appreciate it, if he could actully walk to go get food or talk to kristen,WITHOUT being attacked/ambushed by tweens. (Girls especially!!!)
No Im Not a adult Im 11 ELEVEN! A tween is aying this! sad sad sad sad sad!
In a way I do feel sorry for him. How would you guys like the paparazzi following you 24/7?! He says he doesn’t like going out much. Why would he? He keeps getting screamed at by groups of fans. He can’t walk down the street like a normal person without someone noticing him. But I reckon once all the Twilight movies are done his popularity will begin to decrease. He will be offered good movie roles so he should enjoy his fame and success whilst it lasts. Life is short Rob! Live it up whilst you are young & famous and ignore all the bullsh*t people write & say about you.
I do feel badly for Rob. It’s true that he can no longer go where he wants, when he wants and do what he wants. Sure, he’s been pretty invisible in Vancouver during the Eclipse filming, but why is that? Probably because he’s been spending a freaking lot of time both on set and in his hotel room. What kind of life is that? I wouldn’t want it, not at all. It’s unfortunate that he’s been so thrust into the spotlight that there is nowhere that he can hide from the fans. While I’d love to get to see/meet him, if I were to see him on the street, I would try to respect his privacy and his time to himself. It is sad how his life seems not to be his own anymore. I don’t think that I would wish that on my most bitter enemy
It’s like winning the lottery….all the “things” you ever wanted are yours……but with a price…first, you have to let go of your old life…and then maybe a few of your friends……that could be very hard to do if you already love the life and friends that you have…I do feel sorry for him…I cannot imagine having a camera in my face anytime I chose to step outside….but that will finally pass. I just hope he can stay grounded until all this craziness passes….He just such a likable person.
It’s going to be a looooong time before Rob can go out in Public without the hoopla. I’m just hoping the guy doesn’t become an alcoholic. At the VMA awards, he was slurring his words. He looks like he’s living off of coffee, cigarettes and booze. His legs are sticks and he looks “haggard”. The pressure has got to be intense.
Hopefully, he doesn’t have a nervous breakdown!
I believe Rob is one of the most fun people in hollywood. I don’t know him but with what I do know about him I feel sorry that someone so young and free-spirited has to be cooped up and not enjoying the world around him. It is sad to know this is the way it has to be for him.
Wow…the more I read all the comments on various websites in regard to Rob Pattinson…the more this article makes sense. The entire world, be it young, middle-aged, old…is completely entranced by the young man. Its alarming and incredible.
I do believe that Rob is in danger of being type-cast…that doesn’t necessarily mean that he will be, but the danger is definitely there. Regardless of his diversity, and/or various roles before, after and between the Twilight saga…if he decides to select roles that are similar to the ‘Edward Cullen’ characteristics then he will most definitely be type-cast. However, I do believe that if he is careful and selective of his future roles…then I doubt it will be a problem. And…since his newfound fame has afforded him the luxury of being in such high-demand, essentially affording him the opportunity to be selective of his roles…well then, hopefully he will use it to his advantage.
I do feel sorry for the fellow…I doubt he ever imagined his path would lead him here. The love of ones art comes with so many sacrifices.
Aww. gosh this is so sad.. I am not a big fan of him but when my friend (the fan) told me about this story.. it’s just soo sad.. and pathetic… the fact that like girl would still be dreaming about dating him… yea… sure… hahahha but this is like really sad.. dude really sad.
I think he figured it all out after Twilight came out. I am hoping that the film people give him a chance. I really think he has something to offer the film industry. Like some that have successfully come before him he does not fit into the typical mold. A plus in my book. Like Redford, the powers that be must go beyond the looks. I think this young man is an untapped talent.
There is a common saying that ‘eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a normal man & dinner like a beggar’. So one can loose weight if breakfast is taken properly.
